Okinawa City, officially declared as Sports Convention City in 1996 in its pursuit of a community built through athletic exchange activities, is home to the area's lamdmark sports facilities, Koza Athletic Park (Okinawa City General Playground) and Okinawa Prefectural Athletic Park. Today, the city hosts numerous professional and amateur teams visiting Okinawa for training camps, including a professional baseball team, Hiroshima Toyo Carp of the Central League. In February, about 10,000 joggers from inside and outside the prefecture gather to compete in Okinawa Malathon. Besides the full malathon course, which run across a part of US Okinawa Base, holiday-making joggers can enjoy the scenic winter-time Okinawa along the 10km road race course. Okinawa City is also the home of Ryukyu Golden Kings and FC Ryukyu, both professional basketball and football teams, respectively. Throughout the season, the city hosts their official matches.
