At the national census held in 2005, Okinawa City was recognized as the nation's No. 1 in terms of the ratio of population group under age 15. The city declared itself as City of Children in 2008 in its bid to realize a child-friendly community and has since been initiating a three-way approach towards the goal; networking, human resource development, and location creation.
The initiative's hub, Okinawa Zoo & Museum (Okinawa Kodomo-no-kuni), features Wonder Museum and Children's Center, where workshops and interactive exhibitions take place. Through popular Satur-ZOO Night (night zoo) and various other events, the park entertains both children and adults throughout the year. The nation's only subtropical botanical garden, Southeast Botanical Gardens, is popular among family visitors.
